About the school
St Patrick's High School Iten is a national boys' boarding secondary school in Iten town, Keiyo North sub-county, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Founded on 1 February 1961 by the Patrician Brothers of Ireland together with the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret and local leaders, the school was established at a time when only two other secondary schools for African boys existed north of Naivasha.
The school is internationally renowned for its athletics programme. Brother Colm O'Connell, an Irish missionary who arrived in 1976 to teach geography, became the legendary coach behind much of the school's success in middle and long-distance running. Notable alumni include 800m Olympic Champion and World Record Holder David Rudisha, Wilson Kipketer, Mike Boit, Peter Rono, Reuben Kosgei, and Brimin Kipruto — most of Kenya's best middle-distance runners over the past four decades. The school traditionally plants a tree in honour of every alumnus who achieves international athletic success.
In the 2023 KCSE, the school posted a mean score of 8.369. The current enrolment is approximately 1,600 students. The school motto is "Excellence in all Endeavours."
