About the school
Butere Girls High School is a national girls' boarding secondary school in Butere sub-county, Marama Central, Kakamega County. Founded in 1916 by Miss Chadwick of the Church Missionary Society as one of the oldest schools in Western Kenya, Butere became a day school in 1931, a boarding school in 1937, and a secondary school in 1957. The school was promoted to national status in 2012.
In the 2024 KCSE, 699 candidates achieved a mean score of 8.711 with 4 A grades and 58 A-. The school recorded a 91.7% pass rate for direct university entry. The institution has a population of approximately 1,642 students across ten streams.
Butere Girls became the subject of national attention in 2025 over the contested staging of "Echoes of War," a play scripted by former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala. The school motto, "For Only the Best," continues to anchor its academic and cultural identity.
