About the school
Kakamega High School is a national boys' boarding secondary school located in Lurambi sub-county, Kakamega County. Originally known as the Government African School Kakamega, the institution was established in 1932 by the Local Native Council of North Kavirondo District — the colonial-era body representing what is now Kakamega, Bungoma, and Busia counties. The founding mission, championed by Harold Arthur Waterloo Chapman, was to provide quality education to African students in Western Kenya at a time when such opportunities were rare.
The school sits on a 95-acre campus. In the 2024 KCSE, Kakamega presented over 600 candidates, with more than 78% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
Notable alumni include former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende, MP and senator Bonny Khalwale, former Cabinet Secretary for Tourism Najib Balala, footballer Dennis Oliech, former Minister for Wildlife Noah Wekesa, and former Vihiga MP Yusuf Chanzu. The current principal is Gerald Arina.
