About the school
Starehe Boys' Centre and School is a national boys' partial-boarding secondary school in the Starehe area of Nairobi, along General Waruinge Street. Founded in 1959 by Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin together with co-founders Joseph Kamiru Gikubu and Geoffrey Gatama Geturo, the school began as a rescue centre for orphans of the Mau Mau uprising and street children.
Starehe is a charitable institution. Approximately 70% of students are educated at no cost through sponsorship, while the remaining 30% pay subsidised fees based on family income. The name "Starehe" is Swahili for tranquility, peace, or comfort.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school recorded a mean score of 10.11 with 47 students earning A grade and 72 earning A-. Admission is highly competitive, with around 20,000 applicants annually competing for under 300 places. Selection prioritises both academic merit and financial need. The school is a member of the international Round Square network.
